Crepes & Cards

Okay, I finally tried this place again after not liking the couple of previous incarnations this little space had gone through. I think La Muse is the final hit. And their crepes are much better than La Creperie's, and you don't have the long wait. Plus dogs are welcome in their pretty garden area. It's a little bit further and not walkable, but I think if I'm in the mood for weekend crepes I'm heading here in the future.

The best crepes in town....a great wine list. Wonderful garden dining area.

The Croque Monsieur sandwich is different than what I remember (this one was made with Swiss and not Gruyere), but it was a very generous portion arranged on a plate around a bed of salad tossed with homemade vinaigrette. My cousin had the chicken cordon bleu crepe, and for dessert we had crepe #10, the one with Nutella, bananas and strawberries. I also had three iced lattes... they don't refill (obviously), but I didn't mind paying for it, the coffee is WONDERFUL here.

I love Long Beach and try to make it out there at least once a month - this place will definitely be one of my regular haunts!

Imagine...  a Saturday morning around 11AM...  Your wife's tummy is grumbling and she's getting grumpier by the second.  What do you do?  Feed her?  Get her drunk?  BOTH!  La Muse is the perfect solution.  The paninis are wonderful and the wine is great too.  We haven't done dinner yet, but we'll surely do it soon.  Hope to see you there!!!

I needed a place with wi-fi to meet with a client. My friend, Dave, recommended La Muse. I was very pleasantly surprised by this little gem  tucked away on the edge of downtown Long Beach.

The ambience was inviting and friendly.  I found the menu well thought out with a nice variety. Don't let the moderate prices on the menu fool you about the quality of the food, which I have found to be consistently high.

While I prefer the inside for meetings with clients, the courtyard is a great place to sit and talk with friends or for a date.

For those using public transit this is one block south and two blocks east of the east end of the LB Transit Mall. If you are on the Blue Line use the 1st St. stop.

Crepe Lovers Find Variety at La Muse

• Hours: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

• Location: Located near the corner of Linden and Ocean in the historic Cooper Arms, La Muse Café is at the gateway to the now well-established East Village.

• Staff/Service: Staff is friendly, fast and knowledgeable.

• Food/Drinks: The menu consists of crepes, panini, sandwiches, salads and pastries. It is broad enough to satisfy the vegetarian and the carnivore, while classy enough to take your mother. The range of crepes is large, from the Bon Jour with eggs and bacon to the Aegean with snow crab and bay shrimp in garlic cream with cheese; the Thalia with eggs, cheese, ham and mushrooms to the Oscar with asparagus, cheese, ham and eggs. There are sweet crepes like the Calliope with butter, sugar and cinnamon to the Erato with Nutella, bananas, and strawberries.

Salads include the Bozeman Special with mixed greens and granola and the Pear, Walnut and Gorgonzola salad.

Sandwiches and paninis include the Saucisson et Cornichon with spiced ham and cornichon pickles, the Tartine de Chevre with goat cheese, garlic, Herbes de Provence all lightly broiled, a veggie special and a hot dog Parisienne.

• Atmosphere: Inside the dining room is cozy, perfect for cool coastal evenings. There is a fine wine bar. In contrast, the outdoor garden patio is perfect for balmy days and breezy evenings: coffee under the stars. The outdoor garden patio is just the kind of place that Jack and Karim might enjoy their espressos after walking Lexi and Picasso, their pampered dasc-hunds.

• The Taste: I stopped Saturday afternoon after a long morning teaching math in Van Nuys and two Sig alerts on the 101 and the 5 blocking my way home. I needed to decompress a little and sat in the garden enjoying a cool breeze reading the latest C.J. Box, while out on Ocean a young woman in a convertible bug blasted Neil Diamond — Jennifer’s favorite singers are Neil Diamond and Neil Young.

I ordered the Aegean crepe. It came with sliced tomatoes and cucumbers topped with a drizzle of the house vinaigrette. The simple salad reminded me of summers on the reservation in Canada, quite tasty. The crepe was large and was topped with some of the crab and shrimp filling. I tasted the filling. It was a fresh, slightly sweet form of shrimp and crab. The cream sauce was light and added a delicacy to the filling. The crepe itself had been seasoned with what tasted like Herbes de Provence. All in all, it was an excellent lunch or dinner crepe.

I ordered a Tartine de Chevre and a Saucisson et Cornichon to go. Jennifer loves both sandwiches and rather than choose one, I figured I’d spoil her with a taste of each. They were served open-faced and had mixed green salad accompanying each. She thought they were both excellent.

We’ve always enjoyed La Muse, but don’t get there as often as we’d like. It’s a nice stop if you’re strolling downtown or visiting the East Village art shops.

• Price: Breakfast, lunch, or dinner for two with drinks is $15 to $25.

"While dining at the previously reviewed Modica's, my friend and fellow dining partner commented that La Muse, the restaurant next door, was finally open. She spoke of this place with mythic verbage and claimed that it was 'Myste's favorite place to eat in Long Beach,' before closing due to massive flood damage.

We vowed to eat there soon.

Soon came in the form of the next day, a balmy, breezy sunday afternoon. It's not often that the ambience, food, and company all align to form a near-perfect dining experience, but this very well could have been one of them.

The interior of La Muse resembles a cafe straight out of France, but the best part was the outdoor seating: a collection of tiled tables hidden in a lush courtyard, flanked by a white picket fence.

The menu is comprised mostly of crepes and panini's, with a myriad of choices between the two categories. I ordered The Aegean crepe--snow crab, shrimp, garlic sauce and white wine. It was an excellent choice--fresh without being fishy, flavorful without being heavy, filling without being decadent. It was a perfect pairing with my black tea and honey.

If an excellent dining experiences is marked not only by good food but also by good decor or ambience, then I'd suggest la dining at La Muse."
